What is psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, and encompasses the study of people’s thoughts, feelings, actions and the processes that keep their bodies functioning. Since becoming an independent branch of philosophy just over 100 years ago, the field of psychology has grown exponentially to include more than a dozen sub-fields today. These include clinical psychology, behavioral and developmental psychology, school and education psychology, organizational psychology and community psychology. Throughout the world, the importance of psychology has greatly increased over the past few decades, and today, it is applied not only in healthcare but virtually every business and industry.
How can I get the Master of Psychology?
In order to enroll in a master of psychology program, you must hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field, and meet certain work experience requirements. The Master of Psychology program can be completed online or on-campus, and normally lasts two years. The coursework included in this program includes subjects such as physiology, psychology, behavioral sciences, diagnosis of psychological disorders, and psychotherapy and other therapeutic techniques. Students then go on to conduct a thesis based field research in psychology under the supervision of their professors.
What are the future prospects?
The increased awareness about psychological disorders and their effective treatment, as well as the rapidly rising number of elderly people in the country is causing an increase in the demand for psychologists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an increase of 12% in employment opportunities through 2018, and the Master of Psychology is the ideal degree to take advantage of this growth and obtain employment at a hospital, clinic, mental care institution, research center or set up your own practice.
